Mollie Makes Handmade Awards 2015

Have you heard about the Mollie Makes Handmade Awards? The first ever one was last year and this year there are five categories you can enter:

Youth Award:  For creative entrepreneurs aged 18 to 25 who haven’t yet established a business.

Start-Up Award: For small handmade businesses that have been trading for less than two years.

Established Business Award:  For small handmade businesses that have been trading for two years or more.

Creative Idea Award:  An award to recognise an exceptionally creative idea or innovation in the handmade community.

Collaboration Award:  Submit any project where you’ve teamed up with another business, establishment or individual to create something brand new.

Last year I did consider entering but didn’t in the end. I just didn’t think that what I was making then was good enough.

This year however, I’m going for it! I’m really happy with my recent re-styling of Little Squish, combining sewing and screen-printing to create bright bold children’s clothes, so I’m going to give it a shot. It’s a bit nerve-wracking; I feel completely out of my comfort zone as I’m not really very competitive by nature (except maybe against myself!) and I really struggle with thinking of myself as creative. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

So here’s what I’m entering:

Brand New Baby Vest

Screen-printed eco-friendly baby vest by Little Squish

The “brand new” design baby vest has been screen-printed using a really great eco-friendly water-based ink. Have a look here for more details about the screen-printing I’m doing  (and I’ve even got videos on YouTube). I chose this gorgeous sunshine yellow colour just because it’s so cheerful looking. I think a lot of baby clothes can be too pale (and a bit dull!) especially if you’re looking at unisex things.

Numbers T-Shirt

Screen-printed eco-friendly unisex birthday t-shirt by Little Squish

I came up with this idea because it’s my biggest squish’s 4th birthday very soon and she loves telling everyone how old she is now. It was important that this design was unisex too and I decided on the turquoise colour for the launch of these after asking my followers on Instagram and Facebook to vote for their favourite! I love the style of the number, I think it has a bit of a retro feel about it and looks great in black against a bright background. It’s now also available in a variety of other colours in the shop.

Retro Robot Dress

Little Squish handmade rainbow raindrops dress with screenprined robot

I absolutely love this fabric; it’s 100% cotton and has beautiful rainbow coloured raindrops all over a white background. It was a perfect canvas for this retro-style robot screen-print! I wanted the design to be the main focus of this, so it’s a simple peasant dress.

Monochrome Dino Skirt

Little Squish handmade monchrome skirt with screenprinted orange dinosaur

My eldest daughter absolutely LOVES dinosaurs. We’ve got quite the collection of them now, both plastic and cuddly. It really frustrates me that we can never find clothes for her with dinosaurs on though, and this is what led me to this re-imagining of my products. Girls love all sorts of things and they should have cool clothes to show that off!

I chose the monochrome fabric because it’s so bold and a real antidote to the “pretty pink” things that are everywhere. The orange dinosaur was screen-printed on and voila!

Yellow Dino Skirt

Little Squish yellow and white geometric print skirt with red screenprinted dinosaur

This dinosaur is the same design, but this time it’s a red dino on a yellow and white geometric background. I just love how the colour of the dinosaur really pops against this background. I’m definitely making myself one of these!

Monster Top

Little Squish handmade girls top with screenprinted blue monster

Mu girls both really like monsters. Well more precisely they like being monsters and growling at people, so this was designed with them both in mind! This friendly little blue monster has been printed on a lovely geometric fabric that has red, blue and orange in it, so I think it’ll go with so many things. This particular top has been claimed by my eldest, so I guess I’d better get sewing some more!

I just want to say a massive thank you to all of you who have liked or commented on the pictures of these pieces over the last few days. It’s a bit scary putting your ideas out there, especially when they’ve taken a while to create, but I’m so glad that you all seem to like what I’m doing! Wish me luck with the Mollie Makes Handmade Awards please!

If you’d like to enter the Mollie Makes Awards too, you’ve got until Friday 22nd May – good luck!

Are there any designs you’d love to see? Let me know!
