Pink flamingos

It’s my birthday today, and so after loving my London Calling dress so much I decided to treat myself and make another dress.

I bought this awesome navy fabric covered with little pink flamingos from Barry’s Fabrics in the week. It’s cotton but has the tiniest bit of stretch to it. It’s also not very wide. I was intending to make another Ruby dress, but because of the pattern and the width I couldn’t make it work. I’d have had flamingos at all weird angles everywhere, which would have just annoyed me.

It may not look it, but it's navy blue

I decided to have a go at the Lilou dress from Love At First Stitch; the gathered skirt variation.

I need to learn to pose properly!

As with my other dress, I was a lazy seamstress and decided against a toile. Call this a wearable toile instead! I chose a size 4 from the book for the bodice, which seemed closest to my measurements. For the skirt, I literally chose a random length which seemed right and used the whole width of the fabric for the front and the same again (but cut in half to accommodate the zip) for the back.

The bodice is lined with the same fabric and the skirt didn’t need lining. Thankfully my gamble with not sewing a toile paid off and the bodice fits really well. I’m most pleased with the skirt, it’s the perfect length and gathered just the right amount. I can’t wait to wear it tomorrow for a rare night out with my friends.

This was such a quick sew it only took an evening, even allowing for a break to watch the Great British Sewing Bee (so excited for series 3!). I did have some sewing machine problems though, which almost drove me insane. It kept starting off sewing perfectly normally and then the bobbin tension went crazy. It was far too loose and every time I tried to pull the bobbin thread up through the feed dogs, it wouldn’t budge and kept on snapping. Argh! I cleaned the machine out, fiddled about with the bobbin tension and then I decided to switch out the bobbin for a different one. Yep, turns out my machine doesn’t like cheap bobbins from the Rag Market! Typical. Still at least my machine is clean before its imminent service (which I’m yet to arrange). Oh and another problem I had was that I sewed the bodice onto the skirt the wrong way around, but that just led to a French seam inside, so no big deal!

I’ve definitely caught the bug for sewing dresses, I just need to decide what to sew next 🙂

What have you been sewing lately? Show me!
